Description

In Greek mythology goddesses known as the Muses smiled upon the fortunate and inspired the creation of literature, the arts, and the sciences. The nine Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus, the most powerful deity of the Greek pantheon, and Mnemosyne, the Titan goddess of memory. The exalted Olympian god Apollo took the Muses under his wing, further guiding their many talents and leading them to inspire gods and mortals to greatness. In the halls of Olympus, he would raise their voices in glorious song, to tell of extraordinary deeds of gods and heroes, and no divine banquet was thought complete without them.

Calliope, whose name means beautiful voice, is the muse of epic poetry. She is depicted with a scroll and stylus, and sometimes as wearing a gold crown.>

Melpomene is the muse of tragedy. Melpomene inspired the Greek dramatic tragedies that would become the foundation of the cultural identity of Western civilization

Erato, whose name means desired or lovely, is the muse of lyric poetry, particularly romantic or erotic poetry

Clio, who was known as the proclaimer, is the muse of history. It was Clio who inspired the songs that tell of glorious actions
