One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of stories and folk tales from the Islamic Golden Age, compiled by many different authors over hundreds of years.
Many of the stories within One Thousand and One Nights, including The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor, were not part of the original version and have been added into the collection by European translators such as Antoine Galland.
In The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor, an impoverished porter named Sinbad pauses to rest during his day’s work on a bench outside a grand palace in Baghdad. Curious about the palace he asks one of the servants about the owner and learns that it belongs to a rich, noble sailor, also named Sinbad, who is famous for his incredible travels.
The coin’s reverse portrays a representation of the Chimera sailing in the background, with Sinbad the Sailor standing on a rocky outcrop with his sword in the foreground. The inscriptions ‘Sinbad The Sailor’ and ‘The Chimera’ also feature as part of the design.
