Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) was an English writer who created some of the world’s most memorable fictional characters, and has come to be regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian period. Born in Portsmouth , England, Dickens was forced to leave school at the age of 12 to work in a factory and help support his family.
Although he had little formal education, Dickens sprang to fame at the age of 24 with the publication of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (also known as The Pickwick Papers). Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour and keen observations on society.
Over the course of his career, Dickens edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, published numerous sketches, and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. In addition to this, Dickens campaigned vigorously for education, children’s rights, and other social reforms. He is remembered as a literary colossus of his age, producing some of the most influential and acclaimed works ever written
